Battery light on while driving: the real cause, and how long you have
A red battery light with the engine running means the battery is no longer being charged: the alternator or its belt is usually to blame, not the battery. The car then runs on its reserve, from a few minutes to an hour depending on charge and what's switched on. Turn off anything that draws power (A/C, rear demister, radio), drive to a nearby garage without switching off, and stop if other red lights appear: on many engines the same belt drives the water pump.
What the light actually monitors
Despite its drawing, this light doesn't measure the battery's health. It comes on when the charging circuit no longer supplies enough voltage. With the engine running, the alternator powers the car and recharges the battery. If the light comes on while driving, that supply has stopped.
At startup, a one-second flash is normal: it's the self-test.
Causes, from most to least common
- The accessory belt loose, worn or broken. A squeal at startup is often the early sign.
- A tired alternator: worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator.
- A corroded terminal or ground, cutting the charge on and off.
- The battery itself, less often, when an internal cell short-circuits.
What to do right now
- Switch off power-hungry equipment: A/C, rear demister, heated seats, radio.
- Don't switch the engine off if you can reach a nearby garage: it may not restart.
- Watch the temperature. On many engines the accessory belt also drives the water pump. If the temperature light comes on, stop: overheating is the real threat.
- Steering suddenly heavy? On cars with hydraulic power steering, that's the belt too. Drive carefully.
And the battery itself?
A worn battery mostly shows at startup: slow cranking, flickering dashboard, hard starts in cold weather. According to ADAC, battery problems remain the number one cause of breakdowns, at 45.4% of call-outs in 2025, electric cars included.
