French roadworthiness test 2026: what actually changes

What officially changed on 1 January 2026

The French Ministry for Ecological Transition published the change: from 1 January 2026, owners are informed during the roadworthiness test if their vehicle is subject to a serious recall.

Two cases follow from that:

• Takata airbags classified "stop drive". The vehicle is automatically placed in contre-visite and cannot circulate until it has been repaired by a garage of the brand. The ministry cites 1.3 million affected vehicles still on the road.
• Other serious recalls. The owner is informed, but no compulsory re-test is triggered.

What did not change

This is where most of the confusion online comes from. Several sites announced an annual test for vehicles over ten years old. That proposal was discussed at European level and was not adopted in the January 2026 French reform.

The schedule remains what it has been for private cars: first test four years after first registration, then every two years.

Preparing so you pass first time

Failures are rarely mysterious. The recurring ones are cheap to pre-empt:

• Lighting. A single blown bulb is a classic. Check every light including the plate and the reverse lamp.
• Tyres. Depth, uneven wear and matching pairs on the same axle.
• Brakes. Imbalance shows up on the rolling road even when the pedal feels normal.
• Windscreen and wipers. A chip in the driver's field of view can fail.
• Warning lights. A light on the dashboard when the engine is running is a red flag for the inspector, which is one more reason not to ignore an amber engine light.

Keep the certificate where you can find it

The test certificate is one of the documents you are asked for at the worst possible moments: a roadside check, a sale, an insurance claim. Along with the registration document and proof of insurance, it belongs somewhere retrievable in thirty seconds.
